ROCKHAMPTON police arrested a man in Musgrave St yesterday who was suspected of scamming people for money.

It is alleged the man had flagged down a number of vehicles from the side of the road in recent days, claiming he had run out of fuel and asking drivers for money.

The arrest comes days after warnings about the alleged scam circulated on social media after people were being approached by a man and woman.

A number of people claimed to have fallen victim to the scam.

According to Facebook comments, one good Samaritan handed over $200.

Rockhampton Police Acting Sergeant Erin Gow told The Morning Bulletin yesterday that people had been targeted on the highways of Rockhampton, Yeppoon, Emu Park and Alton Downs.

"It is an offence to beg in a public place which attracts a penalty of up to six months' imprisonment," Sgt Gow said. "These offences are being committed by individuals who are impeding on people's goodwill and abusing the community spirit in the area."

Rockhampton CIB Detective Sergeant Scott Moon said action had been taken against the man.

"Action has been taken in relation to the matter which will result in a court appearance," Det Sgt Moon said.

"We have received a complaint in relation to the money side of things which is currently being followed up. We ask people to heavily scrutinise and validate the information they're receiving prior to providing assistance or support to anyone who approaches them.

"Social media has put the information out to the community, however if people are victim to such conduct they need to report it to police."

It is believed one man has been charged.
