Pool manager reveals how one moment changed her life

IT'S almost time for the Kingaroy Aquatic Centre to open for the season, and its dedicated manager is looking forward to spending her time on the pool deck again.

With more than three decades of coaching knowledge under her belt, Terry Dunn made the transition to the operational side of business last year.

However she said a career inside an aquatic centre wasn't always in her future.

"I got to state level as a swimmer and nationals as an athlete," Ms Dunn said.

"I wanted to play professional golf but that didn't work out.

"When I was in the police force and was trying to turn pro I got hit by a big truck.

"I had some very bad injuries and am lucky to be alive and not in a wheelchair.

"I would of never thought I would be doing what I'm doing now."

Despite the 4am wake up calls, Ms Dunn said the early morning starts were worth it because of the people at the pool.

"It's been very different coming from Brisbane to Kingaroy," Ms Dunn said.

"I think everyone struggled at the start because I am pretty strict with pool behaviour.

"In saying that, the kids are very respectful and winners all round.

"I feel extremely blessed to have had this opportunity and have made some wonderful friendships.

"The community is very generous and will do anything for you if you ask.

"That's the beauty of life here and the big difference from the city to the country."

As the opening date of Wednesday, September 25 looms closer, Ms Dunn said she was excited to see how the new aquatic centre's new programs would be received by the community.

On September, Saturday 21 the pool will host its open day for registrations for learn to swim, squad programs and swim club.

To celebrate the launch of the season, the centre will also be holding a family fun day on Saturday, October 5.

There will be a plenty of food and games as well as a pool inflatable and a movie being played at the event.
