ERGON Energy crews restored power to thousands of customers across the South Burnett whose supply was interrupted as storms swept through yesterday afternoon and evening.

The network was impacted by multiple lightning strikes, primarily in the Nanango and Kingaroy areas, during the storms.

A total of 34,240 lightning strokes were recorded in the South Burnett Regional Council area during the storms.

More than 8000 customers lost power for up to 50 minutes yesterday afternoon after power was cut from the Kilkivan bulk supply substation.

Hundreds of customers were without supply as crews responded to more than a dozen instances of damage to the high-voltage network and dozens of cases where individual customers lost supply.

Fewer than 10 customers in the South Burnett whose supply was interrupted last night remain without power this afternoon, although about 400 customers are affected by a power supply interruption which began just before 1pm.

The Bureau of Meteorology has released a severe thunderstorm warning this afternoon for Kingaory, Yarraman, Toowoomba, Dalby, Chinchilla, Taroom and Miles.

The storm is likely to have damaging winds, heavy rainfall and large hailstones.
