Proposed anti-bikie laws of little use, criminologist says

THE State Government is fast-tracking tougher restrictions on organised crime in the wake of recent flare-ups in bikie-related violence.

Some of the proposed laws included bans on gang members gathering in groups; owning, operating or working in tattoo parlours; promoting or recruiting for their organisation and wearing club colours in a licensed venue.

Assistant Commissioner for Central Region Mike Condon welcomed the legislation that would strengthen the police position as they tackled organised crime networks.

"No law-abiding citizen should have any fear in relation to these changes to legislation," he said.

However, Bond University Assistant Professor of Criminology Department Terry Goldsworthy said he was "flabbergasted" at the proposed changes.

"I don't know why they're looking at RICO laws based on Friday night (Gold Coast bikie brawl). Those offences can already be dealt with under the current Criminal Code," he said.

"Four years down the track these changes won't have made one iota of difference and it's going to cost millions in High Court appeals."

Mr Goldsworthy said it would be difficult to prove a gang was promoting itself or recruiting members, and most OMCGs were more sophisticated than traditional tattoo parlour operations.
