Proud to play for Burnett
RUGBY LEAGUE: This weekend junior players will run out on the field at the junior 47th Battalion and show the opposition that South Burnett players give it their all and work together as a team to get the best result possible.
The under-13, under-14 and under-16 South Burnett teams will travel to Bundaberg to take on teams from Fraser Coast and Bundaberg to earn their place in the Wide Bay representative side.
The under-13 side has been training as a team since July 2017 and manager Scott Prendergast said the boys had improved as a unit since their first game together and were ready to test themselves.
"They are a gutsy little team, they are very committed and they are good boys,” he said.
"The boys are keen and there are a couple of guys that will be in the mix for Wide Bay representation.”
The South Burnett sides have played Dalby and the Toowoomba Clydesdales leading up to the 47th Battalion on Saturday.
The games provided players with valuable game time as a team with players from other clubs who are usually their opposition.
Prendergast said the under-13 team had made a big improvement since their first tournament together last September.
"They have improved as a team and they have improved as individuals in the sense that they know each other's game and they know their strengths and those games have really helped forge that team,” he said.
"You see them when they are playing each other weekly that they tackle harder and you can also see that there is a respect between the boys.”
In preparing to represent the South Burnett the players have been reminded of the responsibility that comes with playing in the jersey.
Prendergast has no doubt the teams will play the game in great spirit.
"It brings together a really good crew of people from across the South Burnett and at the end of the day sport is all about the companionship and that is what it has done,” he said
"They will do South Burnett proud and that is what we have asked from them.
"The boys from the bush are certainly going there with the intent to win.”
