Quarry material set for Curtis Is
THE Port of Bundaberg has this week ramped up its operations by adding a second barge to quarry material destined for Curtis Island, Gladstone, to be used in the construction of liquefied natural gas (LNG) plants.
Port of Bundaberg manager Jason Pascoe said the operations had been a boon for employment and business in the region.
"This is a new contract we have negotiated with the LNG industry which is creating jobs and business in Bundaberg," he said.
The quarry material is being supplied by local company Paverock Quarry from their quarry near Childers, while the cartage of the quarry material to the port and during the loading process is being provided by Bundaberg Earthworx.
Mr Pascoe said it was good to see the region sharing in the enormous capital investment by the LNG industry in Gladstone.
"The Port of Bundaberg will continue to look at the opportunities to assist in similar ways of moving forward," he said.
In a first for the port, the material is being loaded from a mobile conveyor off the main wharf, which is normally used for loading sugar.
"This is the first time we have been using the mobile conveyor we have installed at the port," Mr Pascoe said.
"The mobile conveyor loading system is working very efficiently with around 2400 tonnes being loaded on a barge within seven hours."
Since April, quarry materials have been loaded and barged from Bundaberg to a large uploading facility being built on Curtis Island by BMD Construction.
