Races cancelled after rain forces reschedule

GAYNDAH Jockey Club's race meeting scheduled for January 19 has been cancelled.

President of the Gayndah Jockey Club Brad Duke said the club was appreciative that Racing Queensland was prepared to offer them another meeting after Gayndah's 150th Annual Queensland Derby went ahead without the horse racing.

More than 60 millimetres of rain fell in the 24 hours prior to the October derby, and the club had no choice but to call off the six races headlining the event.

"However January has its problems with weather, a meeting being in a major school holiday period and a limited ability to attract fields to race," Duke said.

"There is no other Queensland country race meeting in January.

"I want to make sure the Club and the new committee has every opportunity to forward plan for events and partner with all racing partners, and sponsors et cetera so the Club's financial sustainability is enhanced."

Duke said January was simply not a good time.

The Club has allocated additional prize money for the June meeting and are now focussing all efforts on running successful race meetings in June and October 2019.
