Racing season off to speedy start ahead of opening night
THE opening night of the Kingaroy Speedway racing season is around the corner, and the president and competitor of the local club could not contain his excitement.
Last year the South Burnett club celebrated 51 years of racing and Travis Barron said he hoped they would continue to flourish into the future.
With nearly three decades worth of experience around the track, Barron said the season's opening night would be full of family-friendly entertainment.
"We have already received 114 nominations for different categories,” Barron said.
"To put it into context, Toowoomba had 70 and Gympie had between 50-60.
"For us to kick off the year with that many nominations is just awesome.
"It will be six hours jammed packed with racing and entertainment,” he said.
Barron said competitors would travel from locations as far as Lismore and Gladstone to attend the weekend's festivities.
The avid racer said a big focus for the local club this year was to upgrade the speedway's amenities.
"We are constantly making changes to the venue.
"This year we have built in better facilities such as a new toilet block and we are always improving the conditions in the pits.
"We want it to be somewhere you can take your kids and they can have a ball.
"It's always an exciting time of year to kick off the new season,” he said.
Seven events will be held at the local speedway as part of the 2019/2020 calender year, with the first one kicking off at 4pm this Saturday, October 19.
