Police flag croc fear in hunt for missing Emerald man
THREE vessels are currently on the water looking for the missing 69-year-old Emerald man.
Two boats include the SES volunteers and family.
A Mackay police spokesman said that the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service will arrive this morning.
"It is believed that there is a crocodile in the area which has been stalking people for a couple of months and they will be trying to locate that crocodile," he said.
POLICE divers from Brisbane will drive to Mackay this morning to join in the search for a missing 69-year-old Emerald man.
Family and friends of the missing man, huddled together as they were debriefed about yesterday's search efforts at the Notch Point camping site.
District duty officer Senior Sergeant Dave Parnell said there were a number of clues which police were analysing to determine the chain of events which lead to the man's disappearance.
"The man appeared to have attempted to launch his vessel," he said.
"People located the missing man's vehicle, still running, with the trailer attached at the boat ramp, but no vessel on it.
"The man's boat had washed up at a site 2km from the boat ramp with no sign of the man."
Snr Sgt Parnell said he suspected the man experienced an issue when he was launching the boat.
"The boat was high and dry when we found it," he said. "As far as we have been advised the hours on the trip meter on the vessel were consistent with when it was last used.
"There is also nothing unusual about the boat - it wasn't damaged and the motor was half up.
"The motor being upright is an indicator to us that the engine wasn't turned on at all."
Following the recovery of the boat at West Hill Island, family members of the missing man used the vessel to assist with the search.
The Rockhampton-based RACQ Capricorn Helicopter Rescue Service chopper also joined in the search effort yesterday.
But the helicopter was not expected to return for the search today. This is the second large-scale water search in the Mackay region in the past two months.
On November 17, police divers recovered the body of a 49 year-old man who went missing at Eungella Dam.
THE search will continue until it is too dark to see this afternoon.
Mackay police District Duty Officer Senior Sergeant Dave Parnell said that the search will be suspended overnight.
"When it gets dark we won't be able to see anything so we will suspend the search until first light tomorrow morning.
The Capricorn Rescue helicopter has taken on the search and rescue operation as CQ Rescue has been tasked to a different job.
POLICE are still searching an area around Yarrawonga Park Reserve on Notch Point Road to help locate a 69-year-old man reported missing from Carmilla.
The man launched his boat at 4pm yesterday at Notch Point and has not returned since.
A vehicle remains parked where the man launched his boat and police hold concerns for his safety, police said.
Officers are conducting a search, with the assistance of SES, CQ Chopper and Water Police, after a fishing boat was located on West Hill Island, two kilometres from the boat ramp.
Police are urging anyone, particularly vessels around West Hill, Green Hill and Cape Palmerston who may be able to assist to contact them immediately.
FAMILY, SES and QPS are currently on the scene at a search and rescue operation near Notch Point.
Mackay police District Duty Officer Senior Sergeant Dave Parnell said they were alerted that the man was missing overnight.
"Tourists have found the car and the trailer was still backed into the water, the tourists have moved the vehicle away from the ramp and alerted police (to the incident)," Snr Sgt Parnell said.
"He is from the Mackay region and we our plan is to search and search and search and our best result would be to find him."
