Rail trail helps achieve a personal goal
ANDREA Wecker regularly rides from Wondai to Tingoora on the South Burnett Rail Trail.
It's an impressive fitness feat, and one she didn't think she could achieve three months ago.
She has been riding on the rail trail every Saturday morning for the past 10 weeks as part of the South Burnett's Get Out, Get Active, Get On Your Bike program.
When she first started Mrs Wecker couldn't have imagined riding the 15km but now she does it with ease.
"I have got a bike at home and I have done a bit of riding but when I heard this program was running I thought it would make me get out and do it each week,” she said.
"Each time I go a bit further and I have been a bit surprised.”
As part of a State Government grant, the council purchased 15 bikes and helmets for the program, including six fitted with child seats, for participants who did not own a bike.
Saturday was the final official week of the program but the group will continue to meet at 8.30am on Saturday mornings in Wondai to go for a ride.
Now the program is complete, the bikes will be available for hire at various South Burnett recreational facilities to offer tourists and residents another activity.
Mrs Wecker said she would be hesitant to ride without the safety of the rail trail.
"I wouldn't ride a bike on the road, I would be too scared so the rail trail is just fantastic,” she said.
The program was also run in Murgon and Kingaroy and councillor Ros Heit said it was great to see so many people enjoying the rail trail.
"I think it was a really good grant because it has got people out and building their confidence in riding and they will continue to enjoy and it uses the rail trail where people can ride in safety,” she said.
The program saw people who have never ridden before step up to the challenge and get on the trail every week.
Personal trainer Christian Sutton has been running the sessions and has been impressed by the determination of riders to to set themselves challenges and give it their all.
"I think it has been good even for some people who aren't necessarily confident on bikes they can still go for a ride, it doesn't have to be as far as everyone else but they can still go for a ride and still enjoy it,” he said.
