Railway museum back after floods

AFTER eight months of hard, painstaking work the Bundaberg Railway Museum opened its doors again on Saturday.

Bundaberg Railway Historical Society museum co-ordinator Graham Hibberd said a team of workers had been spending three days a week since the January flood trying to restore the museum.

Mr Hibberd said the re-opening was a very successful day, with a number of people visiting the museum.

"We've got the restoration about 75% complete, which means the building itself and the internal displays are acceptable," he said.

Mr Hibberd said the society had acquired a miniature train which was a scale model of a Queensland diesel locomotive.

"It's 2.4m long, and there's a set of accessory wagons to the same scale," he said.

"That created a new display item which meant we had something to build around."

Mr Hibberd said the new display led to a whole new concept in the museum.

"We've got more display items, documentation and display items to go in," he said.

"It's amazing how when something happens people dig around and find new items they've had to donate."

Mr Hibberd said most of the work since the flood had been trying to salvage items, getting mud out of the building and disinfecting everything.

"The horizon is looking much better now than it did eight months ago," he said.
