Rain, rain come again and fill Lake Lenthall Dam!
LOW water levels of about 60% at Lake Lenthall Dam could soon mean level two restrictions are triggered for those connected to the dam's supply.
A lack of rainfall over the dam caused by the El Nino dry season and increased water usage by residents has meant water levels have plummeted in the recent months.
Lake Lenthall Dam is the water supply for tens of thousands of Fraser Coast residents in Hervey Bay, Toogoom, Burrum Heads, Torbanlea and Howard.
If the dam is not replenished with rain and the water level falls below 60%, those residents will have to comply with level two water restrictions, as early as next year.
If the cutback goes ahead, avid gardeners like Point Vernon's Henny Hof will no longer be able to use their irrigation systems every day.
Henny said she had noticed her garden - which is packed with thousands of plants - was dry, and she conserved water at every opportunity in hope that the Fraser Coast could avoid restrictions.
"I went out to dig the other day and about 40cm in, the soil was as dry as a bone," she said.
"(Level two restrictions) could be hard for me as I will have to start watering the garden at awkward hours."
Wide Bay Water CEO Peter Care said residents should try to conserve water where they can.
"Although this is the season to relax and enjoy ourselves, we would really like to urge everyone to still think carefully about how they use water," he said.
However, the level two water restrictions of the past have been slightly adjusted compared to last year.
The permitted hours for hand-held hose use have been increased by an hour a day and the ban on cleaning external areas such as windows with a Gerni between the hours of 8am and 4pm has been lifted.
Level 2 water restrictions
- Use of hand-held hoses only permitted from 4pm to 9am and must have a water efficient trigger nozzle.
- Irrigation systems (sprinklers, drippers, soaker hoses) are only permitted for use on four days a week, between 8pm and 6am.
- Filling of swimming pools, spas and water features is only permitted between 4pm and 9am.
