Red Cadeaux’s popularity honoured

THREE times he has been a bridesmaid in Australia's greatest race, and the hugely popular Red Cadeaux could yet have the chance to be the bride in next year's Melbourne Cup.

After finishing second to Protectionist in the great race earlier this month, the nine-year-old has been stabled at the Werribee quarantine complex he uses as a base for his assaults on the Cup.

And in recognition of his popularity, Racing Victoria has honoured the gelding by naming a barn after him at the complex.

Executive general manager of racing Greg Carpenter said the horse deserved to be acknowledged for his remarkable achievements. Red Cadeaux is the first international horse to run in four Melbourne Cups, and is the only horse to have run second three times.

"He's gone as close to winning a Melbourne Cup as any horse in the history of the race," Carpenter said, referring to the 2011 edition when the galloper was beaten by the smallest margin in the history of the race when runner-up to Dunaden.

"And he's such a popular horse in Victoria.

"Maybe, just maybe, he may be back for a fifth shot at the race."

In the meantime the grand old campaigner flew out of Melbourne yesterday, headed for Hong Kong where he is entered for the Hong Kong Vase (2400m) at Sha Tin on December 14.

Coincidentally, Red Cadeaux has not won since he took out the same race in 2012 after being well beaten by Green Moon in the Melbourne Cup, the only time he did not finish second in his four starts in the race.
