Truck crash keeps Leichardt Highway closed


THE Leichardt Hwy was closed until 6.20pm yesterday, as emergency services worked to decant the ammonium nitrate from a truck that caught fire.

A tyre caught fire and Gladstone Police were called to the scene at 4.25am.

The Fire and Rescue crews waited until the tyre cooled down before removing the ammonium nitrate.

UPDATE 12.07PM: A POLICE spokesperson has advised the Leichardt Hwy will remain closed for up to two hours as emergency crews work to clear the scene.

The spokesperson said the fire was out and crews are now working to decant the ammonium nitrate from the truck into another vehicle.  

7.40AM: A TRUCK carrying 67,000 litres of ammonium nitrate has crashed on the Leichardt Highway.

Emergency services have removed the driver as the truck caught fire.

The Highway has been closed north of Banana and drivers are being warned against driving through the area from the south.

Several of the alternative routes are not rated for road trains so please be aware.
