Revellers’ behaviour impresses niteclub operators and police

ZODIAC Nightclub manager Rod Smithers couldn't believe it when he poked his head out the front door of the Rockhampton venue on New Year's Eve.

"It's been awhile since we've been at capacity so it was great to see a big line down the street," he said.

Rod said he was a bit worried New Year's was going to be quiet, with many people choosing to holiday elsewhere this festive season.

"It was surprising we got so many people," he said.

"From 11.30pm we were at capacity all night... one in one out without any incidents, which I was happy about. It was a really good night and everyone was well behaved."

Rockhampton Police Liquor Enforcement's Sergeant Paul Bennett agreed, saying police were very pleased with patron behaviour in the city's Safe Night precinct.

He said patron numbers seemed to be consistent with previous years and there were few incidents.

"Venues within the precinct really gave patrons a safe night," he said.

Police media figures revealed there were 37 arrests in the Capricornia district during the night's celebrations and 46 charges.

A spokesman said nine of these were public nuisance, six were for obstructing police, four for assault occasioning bodily harm and two were common assaults.

He said five banning notices were handed out in Gladstone, while only one was issued in Rockhampton.

With a confetti canon showering patrons at midnight, Rod said the cleaners had a big job ahead of them yesterday.

Rod has managed the club for six years with Darrin "Smurf" Ferguson, who retired earlier last year.
