Monto Roos lay claim to top two try-scorers

WHEN Daniel Nancarrow took to the field for the Monto Roos' final game of this year's rugby league season, he was well aware teammate Shane Carter had scored two more tries than him.

But the centre didn't let pressure get the better of him, and led the charge for the team's last hurrah, crossing twice over the tryline himself.

So while the Roos missed out on this year's grand final, they could lay claim to the competition's equal two leading try-scorers.

"It's not really a goal you set yourself at the start of the season. It's just about playing footy and winning for the team," Carter said.

"But I guess we do get a bit competitive with it at the end of the season. I knew where we were sitting (on the points tally)," Nancarrow said.

Carter also took out the title for most number of points scored, and Nancarrow was dubbed the Central Burnett rep player of the year for his efforts in the Central Burnett Brumbies and North Wide Bay.

The two 24-year-olds are now in their fifth and sixth years playing for the Roos, but have grown up playing footy together since they were both in juniors.

"We played a lot of backyard footy together back in the day, and it still helps to have someone who knows how you play out on the field with you," Carter said.

Carter said he would spend the next few months playing golf, while Nancarrow tries to set up a touch rugby competition, before the Roos start training again before Christmas.

The Monto Roos will have their awards night on September 6, and the boys urge everyone to come along, whether they are affiliated with the club or not.

Leading try-scorers: Daniel Nancarrow and Shane Carter with 16 tries each (Monto Roos)

Rookie of the year: Jack West-Combo (Mundubbera Tigers)
