School rules boys can be boys, unless happier as girls

BOYS can wear skirts, and anyone who considers themselves a girl may use the female toilets.

Welcome to the Newtown Performing Arts High School in Sydney, which has decided to dump uniform rules so that students can express whatever gender they feel best suits them.

The school has a reputation for a progressive attitude, and parents have supported the change.

The conservative Australian Christian Lobby, however, claims the change is a sign that "rainbow politics" are now creeping into schools.

ACL director Lyle Shelton told ABC's AM that dismantling what it means to be male or female was "radical gender theory".

"I think people are wondering if this is where rainbow ideology and rainbow politics is taking us.

"Maybe we better take a second look at the whole agenda that is behind things like the same-sex marriage debate, etcetera."

One mother-of-two told ABC she was happy that children would no longer be "forced into pigeonholes" if they were unsure of their gender identity.

"They're facing enough turmoil and change and crisis of their own. It's not really relevant what colour trousers they're wearing and whether they're wearing a skirt or shorts."

The school had previously allowed students exemptions from the uniform policy if they were changing from one gender to another.

This change means they will no longer need formal permission.

What do you think about this? Should all schools dump uniform rules so students can express whatever gender they feel best suits them?
