Police siege ends after reports of armed man

A SUSPECT who was believed to be armed with a rifle has not been located at a Lowery St home, following a four hour police siege in Toormina.

Just before 8pm, police broke a window and threw what appeared to be CS gas into the building before entering.

The suspect - confirmed as prison escapee Marcus Buchanan - was not found inside.

Tactical units including police negotiators were advised to stand down and a forensic examination of the home was undertaken.

An investigation into the matter is underway.

4.30PM: A SIEGE is underway in Toormina where police are negotiating with a man believed to be armed inside a home.

A two block exclusion zone remains around the Lowery St property and police are asking people to stay away from the area.

Critical response units and police negotiators from the State Crime Command are on scene.

It is believed the suspect is prison escapee Marcus Buchanan, 33, who evaded police last Thursday.

Police are yet to release a full statement on the developing situation.

More details to come.

3PM: STUDENTS from Mary Help of Christians Primary School in Toormina were evacuated this afternoon.

Police have cordoned off vehicular access to the school on Eungella St and Amaroo Cres.

Shortly after 3pm students were evacuated, parents were notified of an alternative pick up point via text messages and the students safely left the school grounds.

The evacuation is believed to be caused by the sighting of a man with a gun.

A similar incident occurred last week when the streets surrounding Nimbin Pl in Coffs Harbour including St Augustine's Primary School were placed in lockdown.

More details to come.
