Senator Nick Xenophon chases senate votes in Maleny

SENATOR Nick Xenophon is the latest politician who will head to Maleny to deliver a pitch for votes in the rolling green hills of the hinterland rather than to the heart of the Sunshine Coast's population base.

Senator Xenophon will be in Maleny on Saturday to support Queensland Senate candidate Suzanne Grant whose connection to the reach dates back to the late 1990s when she commuted from Buderim to Brisbane for work.

Now with a PhD in politics and lecturing at the University of Queensland, Ms Grant started her working life with Telstra and the Deloitte before launching her own consultancy business.

Senator Xenophon is speaking at a campaign function in Brisbane on Friday night and has an engagement in Toowoomba on Sunday.

Ms Grant said the Maleny side trip was an opportunity to get him out of the city with Maleny chosen because its diverse population included "a lot of people who understand the issues we talk about".

She said with the collapse of Palmer United Party both Labor and the Coalition remained unattractive for people looking for a home, other than the two majors, for their votes.

Ms Grant said polling showed the Nick Xenophon Team (NXT) on 5% needing 7.5% to secure a senate seat in Queensland.

She said Australia Institute polling showed the Coalition on course for six Queensland senators, Labor with four, the Greens one and NXT and Labor fighting for the final position.

"Our biggest challenge is letting people know we're here,'' she said.

"People who know Nick Xenophon like him."

NXT's election focus is on three key areas including tackling predatory gambling; Australian made/Australian jobs and Australian government and corporate accountability.

"It's a long campaign,'' Ms Grant said. "That suits us and gives us time to be known.''
