Severe concussion for Hird after bike fall

ESSENDON coach James Hird has been hospitalised with severe concussion after falling from his bike in wet and slippery conditions.

Cycling home on Monday evening from the club's Tullamarine base to his home The 42-year-old was treated at the scene by paramedics and taken to the Alfred Hospital in a stable condition.

It was hoped Hird would be released from hospital as early as Tuesday morning.

Club doctor Bruce Reid said Hird would remain in hospital under observation on Monday night.

"James was very fortunate he was wearing a helmet which has braced his fall," Dr Reid told the club's website.

"He has suffered severe concussion however X-rays have cleared him of any fractures."

It's unclear whether Hird will be available to coach his side against North Melbourne on Friday night.

The journey from the club to Hird's home is about 32km.
