SEVERE STORM: Destructive winds, large hailstones

THE Bureau of Meteorology has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for destructive winds and large hailstones across the Burnett and Darling Downs region.

The Bureau warns that, at 11:15 am, very dangerous thunderstorms were detected on the weather radar near Jimbour.

These thunderstorms are moving towards the northeast.

Very dangerous thunderstorms are forecast to affect Bell, Bunya Mountains and the ranges north of Jandowae by 11.45am and the area south of Kingaroy, the area west of Kingaroy and the area southwest of Kingaroy by 12.15pm.

Destructive winds and very large hailstones are likely.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services advises that people should:

- Move your car under cover or away from trees.

- Secure loose outdoor items.

- Seek shelter, preferably indoors and never under trees.

- Avoid using the telephone during a thunderstorm.

- Beware of fallen trees and powerlines.

- For emergency assistance contact the SES on 132 500.

The next warning is due to be issued by 12.20pm.

A more general severe thunderstorm warning is also current for parts of the Central Highlands and Coalfields, Wide Bay and Burnett, Maranoa and Warrego, Darling Downs and Granite Belt and Southeast Coast districts.
