Shop boss tells thug: F*** off, it's not going to happen

HARDWARE shop owner Stephen Bardell works hard to make a crust, so when a hooded thug threatened him with a knife and demanded money, he had a simple response: "F*** off, mate, it's not going to happen".

With his heart pumping, the portly owner of Buderim Handyman Hardware, at the Wirreanda Shopping Complex on Buderim's King St, made extra sure his stern words were backed up by serious actions.

"I was just at the desk, looked up, and saw a young guy there with a six-inch long serrated steel knife," Mr Bardell said.

"He said 'Give me the money' and I said, 'F*** off mate, it's not going to happen'.

"He took off and I grabbed a mattock and ran after him."

The young thug, who was wearing a black and white hoodie, ran off past neighbouring shops before turning into Lavarack St, leaving Mr Bardell behind.

"He was just a kid," Mr Bardell said.

Six police cars, including a dog handler, CIB detectives, and a Scenes of Crime officer, attended the scene to try to locate the offender and collect evidence.

Some local residents reported seeing the man earlier, acting suspiciously around the neighbourhood. One person had even considered taking a photo.

It was not until later when news circulated of the attempted robbery of their local friendly hardware man, that things fell into place.

Terry Quirke was relaxing under the family patio when he saw the man run by.

"Anyone wearing a jumper in this weather is just crazy," Mr Quirke said.

"I couldn't see his face at all."

The police dog scoured streets for several hours but it is believed the scent was difficult to track in the suburban area.

The attempted armed robbery follows an armed robbery at around 7pm Saturday, at the Glasshouse Cellars bottle shop, Glasshouse Mountains.
