Shutdown continues as Whitehouse and Congress stay split

US PRESIDENT Barack Obama and his Republican rivals have failed to agree on a deal which would have postponed a possible US debt default.

Mr Obama and senior Republicans, including House of Representatives speaker John Boehner, met for talks at the White House this morning after the Republicans offered a temporary deal to increase the government's debt limit

The proposal was for a deal which would have increased the government's authority to borrow money for six weeks, but would not have reopened government departments.

But shortly after Mr Boehner and his allies left the meeting the White House released a statement saying no deal had been struck.

"After a discussion about potential paths forward, no specific determination was made," the statement said.
