Singers, time to dream the dream

THE dream will live on in the South Burnett next year with a special production of Les Miserables coming to town.

The South Burnett Musical and Comedy Society will bring the concert version of the musical to Kingaroy, to be directed by music teacher Sue Dowideit-Reiger.

"The thing I'm looking forward to the most is getting lots of people who love singing and interested in singing together to create an incredible sound,” Ms Dowideit-Reiger said.

"I just think it's such an emotive musical - there is something in there for everyone.

"The music is just incredible. Every time you think you have a favourite you hear something new that's exciting.”

Ms Dowideit-Reiger said the difference between a full production and the concert version was in the acting.

"Normally, if you do the full musical there is acting that actually depicts the libretto of the musical,” she said.

"In this case all we are doing is singing the music and there will be projections to give that link to the audience if they don't know the storyline.

"We're going to have the cast in red, white or blue to look like the French flag, the whole point being the main theme of the musical is they were fighting for liberty and freedom.”

Set in the 1800s, Les Miserables is the story of Jean Valjean, a man who is released from prison after 19 years in jail for stealing a loaf of bread for his sister's starving family.

Valjean breaks his parole to start afresh but spends years being tracked down by police officer Javert.

Valjean, along with a number of other characters, is swept into the June Rebellion, a movement led by young republicans that is barricading the streets of Paris.

There will be special information sessions at Kingaroy State High School on January 14 at 3pm and January 15 at 7pm for anyone interested in being in the production.

Auditions will take place on the weekends of January 20-21 and January 27-28.

"I'm looking for people who want to sing and have a great time,” Ms Dowideit-Reiger said.

"I'm after lots of men, but more than anything a good, strong chorus.

"If you haven't done anything like this before, it's a fantastic project to be involved with.”
