Smashing new year goals one step at a time
MANY wait for the new year to tackle their goals to be fitter and healthier, but one group of keen walkers has had a headstart.
The Murgon Walk and Talk group started on their 2019 goals when the group was launched last October.
Group co-ordinator Iris Ferguson said the walking group had already seen improvements over the past three months.
"It encourages people to have a happy, healthy lifestyle,” she said.
"I make it fun. It's not meant to be an exercise that's a chore. You can walk and look at the beautiful countryside.”
Members of the group, run by Graham House Community Centre, walk together through Murgon at three different times each week.
"Being active is the secret to staying healthy, and walking is one of the easiest and least expensive ways to get moving,” Ms Ferguson said.
They walk at a comfortable pace for all fitness levels and take around half an hour to walk each different route.
"People are more likely to continue walking long after a structured walking program,” she said.
Ms Ferguson said the group enjoyed making friends and mostly did not even notice how far they had walked while they were talking.
Participant Trish Seillor said she enjoyed meeting new people who encouraged her to be active.
"I wouldn't have been going this far if I didn't have the company,” she said.
The group plans to expand to more days as the new year unfolds.
