LOCAL manufacturer and exporter Glen Dobinson is typical of medium-sized Australian business being crippled by rising costs.

"I'm not Liberal or Labor, I just want some bloody politician to listen," he said yesterday.

The co-owner and manager of Dobinson Spring and Suspension hosted Opposition leader Tony Abbott during his visit to Rockhampton and said if Australian business wanted to stay competitive, they needed to be mindful of input costs.

"We have to compete with China," he said.

Dobinson Springs employs 35 people and exports to 40 countries.

The company has experienced a 100% increase in electricity costs in the past six years from changes to electricity network tariffs and the carbon tax.

"Somehow I have to pull that out of my ear ... $50,000."

He is in discussions with Ergon Energy and Queensland Competition Authority regarding network tariffs but has been unable to find out the percentage of carbon tax on electricity costs.

The company increased its prices by 4% in November last year, for the first time since 2007.

"We've been absorbing the increases, but there's only so much we can absorb," Mr Dobinson said.
