South Burnett pub owners call last drinks
AFTER 10 years pulling beers at the Maidenwell Hotel, Gavin 'Spud' Jones will hang up his hat to focus on his position in the South Burnett Regional Council.
The division 2 councillor and his wife Wendy leave behind a lot of good memories.
"I really enjoyed all the things we organised there, the bike rallies, the pig on a spit was always fantastic and all the loyal people that supported us over the years,” Cr Jones said.
"They're a good bunch of people in Maidenwell and we met a lot of friends.”
Cr Jones always had a strong connection to the pub and its township.
"I always liked the hotel, it was just up the road from where my grandfather owned land,” Cr Jones said.
Despite living close to the pub, it wasn't his first venture into the hospitality industry.
"When I was playing football years ago, I went out to Taroom and worked in a pub,” Cr Jones said.
"I worked at Radnor Hotel in Blackbutt for a number of years.”
Cr Jones also owned and operated the Cooyar Hotel from 2004 to 2009 before buying the Maidenwell Hotel in 2008.
Like many country pubs, the Maidenwell Htoels relies on the travellers to the pay the bills and keep the beer flowing.
Cr Jones said the best way to keep them coming was to provide good, old fashioned country experience.
"We get a lot of people coming from the city and the coast, they camp out the back of the hotel,” Cr Jones said.
"The stuff the do here is well within the rules but they can't do it in the city.
"Give them a good meal and a cold beer at a good price and they'll love it.”
While the new owners take over next week, Cr Jones said not much would change in the short term.
"They're good people and I'm confident they'll run it well,” he said.
A weekend-long farewell bash for the Cr Jones and starts tonight and will continue through the late Sunday night.
"People can expect just a wild time, just good bunch of people who have supported Wendy and I over the years,” Cr Jones said.
"It'll be good to catch up with a lot of people and say thank you for supporting us over the years.”
