South Burnett U14s win Wide Bay junior representative trophy

SOUTH Burnett's under-14s bowled their way to victory against Bundaberg with a hat-trick in the Wide Bay Junior Representative Cricket final.

The decision to bat first helped the South Burnett mount early pressure on its opposition on the hard wicket of Gympie's One Mile Complex.

Courtney Sippel, who was named player of the final, led the charge with a solid knock of 29.

South Burnett U14 coach Mark Newton said Bundaberg was a threat with the ball which prevented big partnerships from being built.

"(The ball) stayed down low at times otherwise they took key wickets," Newton said.

The South Burnett left for the sheds 166 all out in preparation for the change over.

Newton said the South Burnett retaliated with the ball and broke down any partnerships Bundaberg attempted to build.

Courtney was a standout once again with bowling figures of 3/14.

Newton said the Murgon all-rounder orchestrated the finish after she paired up with Lawson Kennedy and Michael Evans to bowl a team hat-trick and bring the game to a close.

"Courtney Sippel bowled a batter out. Lawson Kenny threw the ball that ran out another batter and Courtney Sippel was the bowler for a catch taken by Michael Evans to make the team hat-trick," he said.

This dramatic finish sent Bundaberg packing 22 runs short of the South Burnett's total.

Not as lucky, the South Burnett U12s lost to Bundaberg by 55 runs.

South Burnett U12 coach Shane Sippel said his team put up a good fight but just could not match up to Bundaberg's batting.

"(In the first session) Bundaberg were none for 105," Sippel said.

In a dramatic turnaround, the South Burnett bowled Bundaberg out for 209 in the second session.

Sippel said his batsmen batted patiently to almost last the 50-over innings.

"Our guys batted right into the 49th over, they fought very hard," he said.

South Burnett U12 captain Matthew Springate top scored with 60 to help his team to a total of 154.
