Special delivery: postie notches 50 years of delivering

RAIN, hail or shine, Brian Jones has made it his life mission to deliver, and this week he notched up an amazing milestone doing just that.

Brian marked 50 years of service with Australia Post by getting on his bike to do his regular mail run to Park Beach and Diggers.

"It's a great job and I really enjoy the company of the people I work with, so it hasn't been a struggle to stay with the one company for so long," Brian said.

A Coffs Coast local who was once a milko, Brian moved to Sydney as a teen chasing work.

He joined the old PMG as a telegram boy in 1964 and became a postal clerk before a two-year stint as a postie in Papua New Guinea.

Returning home in 1971, Brian found love and decided the best way to support his wife Gayle was to stay in a job he enjoyed.

"Gayle was busy with her business Mac's Fabrics and with my early starts and finishes it worked out well."

In 1978 Brian decided to head outdoors and became a deliverer on pushbike, pedalling the equivalent of Sydney to Perth each year.

"I rode until 1998, and in fact I was the last Coffs deliverer to go from a pushie to a motorbike."

Not surprisingly, Brian is remarkably fit and relaxed for a man of 65.

"The dogs aren't as bad these days as they used to be, nor are the magpies, and the changing weather is all part of the job.

"I'm just as busy as ever despite the increase in email. The only change I haven't really got used to is the use of scanners to sort mail. I much preferred the good old days of doing it all manually."
