Sport gets Rhonda back on a roll

RHONDA Trivett is set to score this weekend when she plays in Australia's biggest wheelchair basketball tournament.

Since rolling onto the court in 2018 she has embraced every opportunity and is looking forward to playing against teams from around Australia and New Zealand alongside her Suncoast Spinners team mates.

"Getting in a wheelchair with no brakes makes me fly,” she said.

"I will be playing against other teams so it gets a bit brutal because they don't know me and they want to win.”

From Friday to Sunday 19 teams and 130 players will compete in the 13th annual tournament at the Caloundra Indoor Stadium.

Ms Trivett is grateful for the encouragement she has received from her doctors and new team mates to pursue the game.

"If it wasn't for Somerset medical centre at Esk I wouldn't be getting out, having a great time and doing the things I need to do to fulfil my life,” she said.

The Suncoast Spinners is a volunteer-led and run organisation, was started by parents of people with disabilities who recognised their children did not have enough sporting opportunities.

Ms Trivett takes part in the weekly skills, drills and regular games run by the organisation for people with disability.

Ms Trivett will play in the B-grade division at the tournament which will also host Australia's best Paralympic and national teams and amateur A-grade teams.

The professionals and beginners will play alongside each other, continuing the inclusion theme across the event.

Entry is free for spectators and the kiosk will be open throughout the tournament.
