Stags trample Ants for premiership

THE Nanango Stags have claimed the 2018 South Burnett rugby league premiership.

The Stags defeated the Kingaroy Red Ants 48-0 in front of their home crowd on Saturday night to take out season honours.

It is the first time the Stags have raised the premiership trophy in 12 years.

Nanango's Lachlin Smith was named as player of the final scoring one try and kicking a conversion while team mate Patrick McCallum was recognised for playing in the true spirit of the game.

Blake Harvey, Patrick McCallum and Robert Ryan got the ball over the line twice for Nanango

Harley Farrar, Warwick Keating and Shane Argent scored one try each and Rhyse Simpson converted three tries for the home team.

The team scored 24 points in each half and coach of the team Matthew Heit said their consistency in both halves was the key to their success.

"We just had to play for 80 minutes. I knew they were coming and that they would be hard to beat. We had to start strong and keep completing,” he said.

Heit was proud of his teams defensive effort to keep the Red Ants from scoring.

"We knew if we defended well we would be able to do it,” Heit said.
