State to match Gympie Council flood mitigation funds

THE Newman Government has agreed to contribute to a $200,000 flood mitigation study for the hard hit region of Gympie.

Gympie Regional Council put forward $100,000 towards the study earlier this month with the hope the State Government would match the contribution.

Following the south east Queensland town's fifth flood in only two years, Queensland Premier Campbell Newman announced on Thursday morning a jointly funded $200,000 flood mitigation study would be carried out.

Mr Newman told Parliament no other town had had it harder then Gympie.

He said while Gympie could not be flood proofed, the flood study would assist and identify mitigation long overdue to help the town into the future.

Back to back floods in the Gympie region over the past two years have cost $88 million in repairs and millions more in lost wages, business and agricultural damage.

Gympie mayor Ron Dyne told a council meeting earlier this month council could not sit on its hands and do nothing.

"It has a responsibility to seriously investigate whether a business case exists to try and mitigate the impact of flooding," he said.

"Funding from external sources can only be attracted if a proper mitigation study has been undertaken."
