State Govt purchases new boats for crocodile management

CRIKEY, three new boats have been purchased to improve crocodile management by the State Government.

Environment Minister Andrew Powell said $250,000 was being invested in boats for the Rockhampton, Mackay and the Bundaberg/Maryborough regions to enhance the ability of wildlife management teams to respond to crocodile sightings.

"We have a strong plan for improving crocodile management in Queensland, with an increased focus on public safety," Mr Powell said.

"We are getting our wildlife rangers out in boats, monitoring our rivers and removing problem crocodiles.

"Unlike the previous Labor Government, we're working to ensure problem crocodiles are managed," Mr Powell said.

Rockhampton will take delivery of the first boat, which has been named Dakani - the Dharumbal word for saltwater crocodile.

Mr Powell said Mackay and the Bundaberg/Maryborough regions will receive boats that are designed to match the local environments.

"These boats have been rated for open water to take account of the different local requirements," he said.

"The vessels for Mackay and the Bundaberg/Maryborough area will also give the local wildlife officers extra flexibility to assist with other operations when required, including responding to oil spills, marine strandings and monitoring whale-watching activities.

"We will do everything we can to make these waters as safe as we can, but people must also remember to always be croc-wise in croc country."

Crocodile sightings can be reported to EHP on 1300 130 372 and EHP investigates all crocodile reports it receives.
