Stereosonic Festival cancelled

The organisers of one of Australia's biggest dance festivals have taken to social media to say they won't be going ahead in 2016. 

The Stereosonic Festival which last year put on shows in Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Adelaide and Brisbane will not be going ahead.

Stereosonic has announced it will not be going ahead this year.

Taking to Facebook to make the announcement organisers said the festival would be back and "bigger and better" in 2017. 

On Saturday the festival's owners filed for bankruptcy in the US - which had meant the cancellation was not entirely unexpected. 

Last year's festival was mired in controversy as two overdosed on ecstacy, which led to widespread calls for pill testing to be made available so users could take the drug safely. 

It appears tickets to the festival had not yet gone on sale.
