Students smash records at school athletics carnival

SEVEN records were smashed at the Murgon State High School athletics carnival, evidence of the high level of talent on display at the event.

On August 1, students, staff and parents gathered to cheer on the kids as they competed in a range of events around the sporting grounds at Murgon.

Not only was Dominic Sandow crowned Under-14s Age Champion, he also broke two long-standing school records at the carnival.

The teen, who competed at the state level for high jump last year, had a personal-best jump of 167cm before this month's carnival.

Thanks to some coaching from his dad Dennis Sandow, who was also a high jumper back in his day, Dominic managed to smash his own record.

This year he jumped 172cm and in doing so broke the boys 14 years record set in 1985 which was recorded at 170cm.

"My favourite subject is physical education because we get to practice athletics, high jump and long jump,” Dominic said.

"I also play footy for the Nanango Stags, which helps with my fitness.”

Dominic also beat the previous boys 14 years 100m record with a time of 11.75sec, which was originally set in 2000 at 11.97.

Another athletics age champion from the day, under 12 boys winner Ziggy Pidgeon, also achieved stellar results.

Ziggy broke two boys 12 years running records - the 200m and 400m events.

He ran 200m in 29.34sec, beating the previous record of 30.52, and then ran faster than the original 400m record time of 1.15.37mins by five seconds to achieve a result of 1.10.06mins.

The other three students who broke records at the carnival were Jack Speedy, Bella Borninkhof and Patrick Collins.

Jack broke the record for the boys 12 years javelin, achieving 18.82m - nearly one metre further than the previous record of 17.7m set in 2017.

Bella jumped an impressive 14cm higher than the previous 112cm high jump record to reach 126cm.

The boys 12 years shot put record set in 2017 at 8.20m was broken by Patrick, who threw 8.57m.

Head of the school's physical education department, Jared Hinds, said the record breakers were eager to participate in the South Burnett Athletics Carnival this coming Wednesday.

"The records in the 12 years divisions shows a really strong athletic cohort this year,” Mr Hinds said.

"The two records set by Dominic Sandow are hugely significant, as they are long-standing records and show the hard work and athleticism of Dom.

"Our staff work hard to provide a wide range of opportunities for students to pursue and develop their abilities.

"A range of sports and opportunities are integrated into the curriculum offerings, as well as lunch-time and after school extra-curricular sporting opportunities.”
