STYLEwise: Lippity do da
CHRISTMAS has inevitably crept up on us again. Soon enough there'll be presents, laughter and copious amounts of food, wrapping paper strewn throughout the house and sticky candy canes crawling with ants will be popping up everywhere. Delicious!
Before all of the madness and mayhem that is Christmas really has a chance to subside we'll be gearing up to see in the New Year. (Where the last year flew away to so quickly is anyone's guess).
Truth be told, I'm not much of a New Year's fan. I prefer sleep. I'll admit there's a certain enjoyment I get out of being the only one who is fresh faced and without a hangover on New Year's Day. (Me? Smug? No!).
Last year I could have seen in the New Year at a fabulous party in the city but I chose to sneak home and hang out with my introverted self instead. This year will be a little different, there's a party at my house and being the host, chances are I won't be able to escape it. Which brings me to the crux of this column, this being a style section and all, we should probably turn our attention to what to wear on New Year's Eve.
If you're anything like me, after the previously mentioned madness that is Christmas has been done and dusted you're left with only a few coins rolling around in the bottom of your bag and nothing but lint in your pockets. A new outfit is not really on the agenda. A new lipstick however, that's another story.
Studies have shown that in times of economic hardship and recession lipstick sales actually increase. There are a number of theories on this which I won't go into here (give it a Google though, it's really interesting).
In terms of lipstick and New Year's Eve, I'd suggest going for something bright, bold and fun. Keep the rest of your make-up minimal and fresh, no one wants to be sweating off make-up at midnight anyway.
I'd go for a matte lippy; you'll get longer lasting wear and won't have to reapply. If it's gloss you're after just slick some on over the matte lipstick, it will last a lot longer than just applying a coloured gloss on its own. So don't buy a new dress, bust out an old fave from last year and treat yourself to a fun new lipstick instead.
Wishing you a very merry Christmas and a fabulous New Year.
