A VINTAGE-looking suitcase abandoned outside bus stop number 17 at Alexandra Headland caused a stir yesterday.

The grey case was placed carefully in line with the roadside near the intersection of Okinja Rd and Wirraway St.

Where it had come from and who put it there remained a mystery when the Daily went to print.

A couple of passers-by had made phone calls to the police to inform them of the abandoned suitcase.

One of them was nearby resident Kathleen Cleary.

Ms Cleary said she had noticed the suitcase when she caught the bus to the shops about 9.50am.

It had disappeared late in the afternoon.

The 76-year-old spent several hours watching over the suitcase to ensure none of the children playing in the nearby park came over and tried to open it.

"It could contain clothes or it could have even been left there as rubbish, but the way it is placed just so and is right where the bus doors open is just not right," she said.

"Six months ago, I would've just gone home, but in this day and age, I wouldn't have forgiven myself if I went home and something happened to a child who tried to open it and see what's inside."

Queensland Police were unable to respond the Daily's inquiry before deadline.
