Swickers upgrades ahead of schedule

THE final upgrades for the new facilities at Swickers are under way, 19 months on from the fire which destroyed the Kingaroy abattoir.

Sunpork Group CEO Robert van Barneveld said Swickers was currently operating at capacity with the processing and boning, and the upgrades were progressing well.

"We're upgrading the kill floor, that's actually progressing ahead of schedule at the moment and we plan to have that fully operational ahead of April next year,” he said.

Staff have worked very hard to keep the facility operational, and deserve the state of the art operating environment, he said.

Mr van Barneveld said the upgrades would allow the company to increase capacity, driving growth within the Queensland pork industry over the next 30 years.

"We need that additional capacity and we're quite confident when the new plant is complete, that the capacity will increase, not decrease,” he said.

The pork industry may be going through a downturn at the moment, however Swickers will still be working hard, he said.

"We hope all of our customers are able to withstand the downturn, because we want them to be able to take advantage of the new facility.”
