Switched On: Regional viewers are left in the lurch

REGIONAL viewers were left more than a little frustrated when the Nine Network launched its high definition service.

The commercial network switched on its high definition channel "9HD" in late November, but there was a minor, overlooked catch: it wasn't for us.

For sport fans, 9HD shaped as the answer to long-term begging for high definition coverage.

Fox Sports was able to show NRL, AFL, Rugby and other major sports in HD, while the Rugby League World Cup aired exclusively on high definition channel 7mate in 2013.

When Nine started to air ads for the first Test between Australia and New Zealand, it also carried the carrot of being simulcast in HD.

That was true for metropolitan viewers, but for us in regional Australia remains a dream.

WIN currently rebroadcasts Nine content, so while we get to watch what is effectively "Channel Nine" the extra bells and whistles seemingly are not included.

At this stage, the only way we will be able to high definition sport is on the digital channels, provided they can be tuned in and carry the content in HD.

It is a major blow for regional viewers who have been left in the lurch.

WHAT I'M WATCHING

IT IS only two months after the US premiere but Supergirl finally hit Australian screens on Sunday.

Supergirl, Superman's cousin Zor-El, also escaped Krypton before its destruction and found a home on Earth (and a new name in Kara Danvers).

Kara (Melissa Benoist) is simply trying to live a normal life before an emergency forces her to spring into action.

Sunday's series opener was tough to get through, but I'll put that down to the long, slow build.

Teasers, trailers, TV spots and a five-minute "first look" gave away most of the first episode which left no surprises.

I'll give the series a few more weeks before deciding whether to continue.

Supergirl airs Sunday nights at 7.30pm on Fox 8.
