Team unite to secure Cup

SOCCER: South Burnett United were favourites going into Sunday's President's Cup game in the Toowoomba Football League championship men's competition and the team lived up to expectations.

South Burnett defeated Willowburn White two goals to one to bring home their first silverware from Toowoomba in their first season in the competition.

Co-coach of the side Lauren Mangan is proud of the fight shown by her team.

"We had our first half wasn't as slick as we had hoped it to be and conceded a goal after a defensive error,” she said.

"We were only playing in third gear and at half-time we spoke about how we needed to ramp up to fifth gear.”

The team went into the second half one goal down and with a clear focus to win the match.

The team managed to snag two late goals off the boot of Joe Copas and another from Kieran Askin to give United the win.

South Burnett drew two all when they faced Willowburn in March and Mangan said the Toowoomba team forced them to step up.

"The boys are very happy with the win,” Mangan said.

"We certainly felt that we were favourites but it was a hard slog and they did really well to keep us out because we are an attacking team.”

Co-coach of the team Keiran Askin picked up an injury in the game but Mangan is confident he will recover and continue to play a key part for the team for the remainder of the season.

The team will continue to working towards their goal of playing in the grand final.

At the start of the season we had a clear focus of making the grand final and that is still on track and coming away with the Presidents Cup has boosted our confidence,” she said.

"We spoke about before the game making sure we don't have any unforced errors that lead to goal and we want to limit those unforced errors.”
