Teams will push the limits

THOUSANDS are in Maryborough in search of human-powered glory at this year's RACQ Technology Challenge.

More than 120 teams will take part in a 24-hour endurance race, from noon today.

Yesterday volunteers, officials and plenty of team members were out in force, preparing for an exciting weekend of HPVs, pushcarts, CO2 Dragsters and solar boats and cars.

St Mary's College Maryborough's Southern Cross Racing HPV team, made up of senior boys, are hoping for victory this year, after just missing out in 2012.

Team captain Samuel Truscott said he was looking forward to the race and believed his team would have a great shot at winning.

"We didn't participate in Willowbank this year, as we had some bike troubles but last year we came second overall, which we're pretty proud of," he said.

The team has been hard at work, training since May, and Samuel said they were all grateful for their parents' and teachers' help.

"I wish good luck to all the other teams and go Southern Cross Racing," he said.

Aldridge Schools All Stars team manager Deb Pacey is hoping her junior mixed team can win their division.

This weekend is the team's first race and Mrs Pacey said she was dreading any hairpin bend rolls but looking forward to a great weekend.

"It is fantastic for team building and learning to work together… also learning to fight fatigue in the middle of the night," she said.

Fraser Coast Council event co-ordinator Nicole Hawker said set-up started about 6am and had been going well.
