Tenant leaves landlord trash pile

A 60-YEAR-OLD disabled woman has been forced to wear the dirty deeds of an ungrateful tenant who left a skip bin filled with rotting food and rubbish in front of her house.

The vile mixture of trash has sat idle at the Point Vernon address since the tenant moved out three weeks ago.

Marilyn Paton owns the property and said the stench being released from the rubbish was costing her income.

"The real estate has brought people through but nobody will lease the place with it the way it is," Ms Paton said.

"It is my source of income and has never been empty for this length of time in the past."

The skip hire company collected its skip from the property this week but left the rubbish on the driveway after receiving no payment from the tenant.

They did not know the landlord was an elderly woman with disability impairments and have since organised for collection of the rubbish.

The company's owners said they normally demanded payment up-front when a tenant was vacating a property but on this occasion had no prior knowledge.

Ms Paton said that was little consolation for her now.

"I would have used the bond to pay for the rubbish (removal) but there was not any left," she said.

"The tenants had fallen on hard times and had not paid rent for the month before they left.

"I also had to get upstairs painted again - it's just been really disappointing."

Ms Paton said she decided to speak out to warn other landlords of the problems they could sometimes face.
