#ThanksTony trending as Abbott lists achievements for women

PRIME Minister Tony Abbott's comments that his greatest achievement as the minister for women was repealing the carbon tax has caused a Twitter backlash and of course, a trending hashtag.

The hashtags #thankstony and #PutYourIronOut began trending as social media users started showing their disdain over the comment.

The comment was made during an appearance on the Today Show to talk about his cabinet reshuffle.

Host Lisa Wilkinson asked Mr Abbott to nominate his top achievement in his capacity as MInister for Women.

"Well, you know, it is very important to do the right thing by families and households," Mr Abbott said.

"As many of us know, women are particularly focused on the household budget and the repeal of the carbon tax means a $550 a year benefit for the average family."

Since this morning, Twitter has erupted with satirical memes.

Tweets include: "My husband doesn't let me focus on the budget - it distracts me from the ironing... He prefers I'm distracted from the pay gap #thankstony" and "#ThanksTony for reminding me how life was back when my grandma was ironing and taking care of the family budget and worrying about carbon tax".

Leader of the Australian Greens Christine Milne also took to social media to vent her frustration with the Prime Minister.
