Army base raises concerns about Buddhist school

THE Oakey Army Aviation Centre has raised concerns about a planned Buddhist education and meditation facility.

The army base is concerned that Pure Land College will be located within 3km of an "air gate" through which all air traffic relating to the base is funnelled.

The proposed site is north-west of Toowoomba on Oakey-Mt Darry Rd.

Concerns about noise, light and the height of the facility were discussed at a meeting with council, the army and Pure Land College.

In response, Paul Kelly from Precinct Urban Plan, who is acting on behalf of the college, said architects would provide noise insulation to mitigate the noise generated by low-flying aircraft.

"Proposed lighting will not hinder night training operations and the facility will limit any flood lighting," Mr Kelly wrote.

"Windows and walls will be fixed to ensure vibrations from high frequency turbulence will not affect structures."

Mr Kelly noted that the building specifications did not encroach into operational airspace and complied with the relevant codes.

"The maximum height is not higher than the current tree canopy."

The application is now open for public comment, with residents encouraged to have their say on the project.

The comment period started yesterday and will continue until December 12.
