Thieves prey on church, stealing orphan cash

A SMASH and grab at St Saviour's Church netted thieves $1000 of donated money overnight on Monday.

The "low act" has deprived the Anglican Church of funds that were slated for blind, disabled and orphaned Fijians.

Churchwarden Kerry Yates said robbing a church was a low act and that there were desperate people around.

"If they'd approached us we likely would have helped them," she said.

The thieves smashed open a door to the church's vestry and jemmied their way into the safe.

"The one good thing was they didn't vandalise anything," Mrs Yates said.

"Our huge printer, that we use every week to get news to people that can't get to church, wasn't damaged.

"They also lifted a portable microphone out of the way and didn't smash it."

Mrs Yates said it appeared a hole was drilled in the vestry door to try and open the latch and when that didn't work the whole door was smashed down.

The stolen money would have gone towards paying the church's running costs and an upcoming charity mission to Fiji.

A new door has been installed and there will no longer be funds kept on church premises.

Senior Constable Matt Columbus from Gladstone CIB said police were still investigating the break and enter and appealed for anyone with information to contact Gladstone Police.

The church hopes to recoup some of its losses with a curry night at the Church Hall on Friday from 6.30pm.

Authentic Indian curries will be available, cooked by Father Daniel Paulraj.

"Attending the curry night is a great way for the community to assist us," Mrs Yates said.
