Greenberg speaks out on Carney’s Cowboys contract

NRL boss Todd Greenberg says he won't be rushed in making a decision on the contract registration of Todd Carney.

The governing body are considering allowing Carney to sign a one-year deal with North Queensland.

"I would suggest to people they just allow us to do what we've always done, which is assess the merits of it, go through it thoroughly, then we'll make a decision on merit," Greenberg said on Monday.

Todd Carney hopes to rejoin the NRL.

Greenberg's comments come after Carney pleaded with the NRL to approve the contract, telling News Corp Australia he was happy to abide by any conditions

"I'm happy for the NRL to put any conditions on me," he said.

"If they gave me a contract, I would be happy to accept whatever they ask of me.

"I know I would be on my last chance and I would take it with both hands and work as hard as I could."

It was reported on Sunday the NRL is now in possession of a 41-page document detailing Carney's movements since he last played in the competition.

According to Fairfax Media, Carney has seen counsellors, attended Alcoholics Anonymous meetings and had a record of clean behaviour in his three seasons in the English Super League.

If the NRL clears the former Dally M Medallist Johnathan Thurston said he will make great backup for last year's grand finalists.

"He would be a great addition to our club moving forward," Johnathan Thurston told Channel Nine's Sunday Footy Show.

"Hopefully that can be done and dusted soon and we can just get back to playing footy."
