Masterchef judges score a taste of humble Toowoomba pie

HE'S the former Toowoomba student who made one of the MasterChef judges eat humble pie.

James Bell was one of 16 amateur cooks competing for one of nine spots in the reality cooking show's Top 24 last night.

After missing out on an apron in the first round of what has been the most competitive judges auditions to date, Bell was asked to cook an impressive savoury dish in his first invention test.

The 23-year-old's deconstructed French onion soup was so good it won over sceptics Matt Preston and Gary Mehigan.

"I hate dishes like this normally because, if it doesn't make us look at the original dish in another way, why do it?" Matt Preston said.

"This makes us look at the dish in another way. This shows us that you really can cook."

After also expressing his wariness at a deconstructed dish, Mehigan licked the plate clean.

"Humble pie tastes absolutely oniony and delicious and complex and wonderfully surprising," Mr Mehigan said.

"That was absolutely delicious."

Mr Bell attended Toowoomba Grammar and QUT and was working as a financial analyst in Brisbane when he applied for the show.

"It's strange seeing yourself on TV," Mr Bell said.

"It's surreal knowing everyone in Australia is seeing that."

MasterChef continues tonight and tomorrow at 7.30pm on Channel 10.
