Toowoomba MPs pour cold water on no booze proposal

A CALL for politicians to remain under the blood alcohol limit of .05 at all times while working has been met with ambivalence from Toowoomba's MPs.

Defence Secretary Paul Barratt this week said unless the minister was on leave, they should be under the limit, because they could be called to duty at any time.

Federal Member for Groom Ian Macfarlane said he was not "buying into the idea" of placing restrictions on politicians ability to drink on the job.

"I behave properly at all times, I don't think it's inappropriate behaviour, I think you set yourself limits," he said.

"I only comment on myself, I don't have a beer over lunch. I set a standard for myself and that's how I operate."

Mr Macfarlane said he would make an announcement on his future in politics when Parliament resumed this year.

Member for Toowoomba North Trevor Watts said "like any other profession, a politician must abide by a high standard of behaviour while at work".

"Being impaired by alcohol when on duty or making decisions is highly inappropriate," he said.

Member for Toowoomba South John McVeigh said all members of parliament were expected to abide by the law like all citizens.

"Any citizen who is under the influence of alcohol while carrying out their jobs, I think needs to have a good hard look at themselves that goes for ministers as well."

Should politicians be under the limit unless they're on leave?
