EXCLUSIVE: The big man from an outback Queensland service station called the woman into his office for a talk. She was wearing a white dress and had an English accent he couldn't place. She'd just filled up with $103 worth of unleaded and gone in to explain she couldn't pay.

It was not the money he was worried about.

It was her.

Her eyes were blackened and her cheeks were swollen. She was talking through tears, but her story was not clear. She said she was on the way to inland Charleville, to be with friends.

"She was battered," said the man, who manages the Puma fuel stop in the township of Banana, 600km northwest of Brisbane.
