FLAMES that erupted in Kingaroy last night might have looked dangerous but were just part of a training exercise for local firies.

Rural and urban crews conducted a training exercise on a vacant block at Stolzenberg Rd at about 6:20 last night.

Bruce Groer from Kingaroy Fire and Emergency Services said the exercise was part of a state-wide program called Operation Cool Burn.

"There will be a series of these in areas across the South Burnett," Mr Groer said.

The program gives rural and urban crews the chance to train together and conduct hazard reduction burns before summer.

Operation Cool Burn runs until the end of August.
